STOCK MARKET
7/12/02
Californians took their lumps along with everyone else this week in the stock market’s dramatic drop.  Investors spooked by accounting scandals sold off stocks, taking the market to five year lows -- even as some bellwether stocks such as Yahoo reported modest gains.  The tech heavy NASDAQ had a slight uptick by the end of the week, but signs of a tech recovery in the second half of this year are seeming less and less likely.  Peter Jon Shuler has this report.  3:07

GILROY PRINCIPAL
7/11/02
The popular principal of Gilroy High School has resigned, along with an assistant principal.  The two quit to protest a district decision to implement a pilot honors program for 9th graders this fall.  They’re worried the program will lead to segregation in the school.  KQED’s Peter Jon Shuler reports.  3:21

ROSIN COVEN
7/5/02
The Bay Area band Rosin Coven doesn’t have a record deal.  Or professional management.  Most of the members still have day jobs.  But in the last five years, they’ve developed an international and almost fanatical following with their flamboyant stage shows and quirky, irreverent music.  After touring New York last month, the self-proclaimed “Pagan Lounge” band returns home for a July 10th concert at San Francisco’s Great American Music Hal.  Peter Jon Shuler prepared this report.  4:47

CALIFORNIA HOMES
7/3/02
Housing prices in the western United States are no more vulnerable to a market bubble than the rest of the US.  That’s the finding of economists at the Federal Reserve Bank in San Francisco, in a report released yesterday.  The Fed says California housing prices are still recovering from a dip during the recession of the mid 90s.  But as Peter Jon Shuler reports, not everyone agrees with that assessment.  4:29

PRIVACY BILL
6/25/02
It’s round two in the state capital in a battle over whether or not Californian’s have a right to control their own financial and other personal information.  A popular Consumer Privacy bill died in the legislature a year ago.  Now, it’s back in the assembly again this year.  With just a few weeks to go and just a few votes short, the bill is the subject of some of the most intense lobbying of this legislative year.  Peter Jon Shuler reports.  3:20

ENERGY OUTLOOK
6/21/02
What a difference a year makes.  It’s the first day of summer and we haven’t had one rolling blackout.  By this time last year Californians considered blackouts part of their daily lives.  But this year grid operators are optimistic about having enough energy reserves to meet demand.  That’s because there are more plants online, more snowmelt this year for hydropower and Californians are conserving more energy.  Peter Jon Shuler reports.  3:18
